  • What is the minimum age to take the lifeguard course?
Candidates must be 15 years old by the final day of class.
  • Do I need to attend all class sessions?
Yes, you need to attend all dates and times listed on the class you register for. If you discover that you cannot make all dates/times, email Alex@selaaquatics.com to request a transfer. We cannot always guarantee a transfer, and fees may apply, so check your availability carefully before booking.
  • What is blended learning?
Our lifeguard classes use the American Red Cross blended learning format. This is an e-learning which must be completed before you arrive to your first day of class. You complete it from home, and it takes around 6 hours total to complete.
  • What are the swimming prerequisites?
The American Red Cross sets the swimming prerequisites for the lifeguard course. You will demonstrate these requirements at the beginning of class. Complete a swim and tread sequence consisting of the following three actions: jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim using either front crawl (AKA freestyle) or breaststroke for 150 yards; after swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading; and after maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards using either front crawl or breaststroke. Retrieve a 10-pound dive brick from a depth of 7 feet and carry it 20 yards while swimming. Students must swim 20 yards before diving to the bottom of the pool to retrieve the 10-pound brick. Students must then swim 20 yards to the pool edge, while supporting the brick in both hands. Students must retrieve the brick and exit the pool without using a ladder or the steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  • What do I need to bring to class?
You will need to bring proof of completion of your blended learning, proof of age (birth certificate or ID), swimsuit, towel, and change of clothes. For full day classes, there will be a lunch break, so you can bring lunch or lunch money. Swim goggles are optional for the prereq swim.
  • How do I receive my certification card?
Within 10 days of finishing your class, the Red Cross will email the student with a digital copy of your card. You can also look up your card online at the Red Cross website: https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/digital-certificate
